Summer Learning

When choosing books:

• Pick an interesting topic- Your child should be interested in the book, even if it doesn’t interest you. 

• Pick Just Right Books- Choose books that are easy and just right. 

• Have Fun- Make it fun!  Choose silly, serious, spooky, or scientific books!

Reading Ideas

• Read a story or have your child read.

• Model good habits by reading in front of your child.

• Provide a consistent, daily reading time without distractions.

• Visit the public library frequently. Join public library summer reading programs.

• Provide opportunities for your child to attend theater performances, musicals, etc. 

• Limit TV or video games.

• Have your child pick their favorite part.

• Ask your child to think of alternative solutions to a problem. 

• Have your child predict what will happen next. 

• Ask your child to change the ending.

• Compare and contrast movies and videos with previously read books. 

• Read high interest literature, including magazines. 

• After watching a movie, have your child retell the movie from beginning to end in the correct order and, using details, describe the scenes. 

• While you’re reading to your child or when your child is reading to you, have them create their own movie in their mind; have them draw pictures of the story. 

• When reading together, after each paragraph ask the child ‘wh’ questions (Who? What? Where? When? Why?) to see if they are comprehending.

Writing Ideas

• Have your child write the menu for dinner. 

• Have your child locate letters and words on food containers. 

• Have your child help write a shopping list and check off the items on the list as you shop. 

• Have your child keep a journal (it can be for travel, family events, or even feelings). 

• Encourage letter writing, pen pals, and thank you notes. 

• Write a story, song, poem or article about a family event.

• Write a conversation using correct punctuation. The conversation could be between two of their favorite TV characters, two characters in a book, or even two members of their family. 

• Create a research project.

• Write letters requesting information or commending the actions of some person in the news. If, for example, a student has been studying the work of the Supreme Court, she might write to one of the justices regarding a decision made on a case. 

• Encourage students to write to their Congressperson. These representatives of the people are glad to supply information about current affairs—new bills being considered, their opinions regarding certain issues, government-printed pamphlets which are highly informational, and so on. They will often respond to letters that request information or ask questions. 

Math Ideas

• Play math activities listed above.

• Ask your child to identify and read numbers on signs while riding in the car. Ask them what is 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less than that number.

• Have your child use cash to count out money and pay for items at the store. Will there be change? How much?

• Use sidewalk chalk to write numbers on the driveway or sidewalk.

• Do Soduko Puzzles together.

• Ask your child to count forward or backward from any start number while spending time together.

• Build numbers on the refrigerator using magnetic numbers. (They are found at the Dollar Store!)

• Play card games together.

• Roll dice and recognize the number of dots appearing. Ask them to write the number that matches the number of dots.

• Make up real world problems that have two or more steps to solve. Have them solve the problem.

• Put objects in a row. How many? Add more objects. How many now? 

• Put objects in a row. How many? Remove some objects. How many now?

Al escoger libros:

Ideas de Lectura

• Lea un cuento o haga que su hijo lo lea. 

• Sea ejemplo de buenos hábitos leyendo frente a su hijo.

• Proporcione un espacio de tiempo a la lectura diariamente sin distracciones.

• Visite la biblioteca con frecuencia y únase a los programas de lectura de verano.

• Bríndele la oportunidad a su hijo de presenciar actuaciones en el teatro, musicales, etc...

• Limite el tiempo pasado frente a la televisión y/o los juegos de video.

• Lea literatura de lato interés, incluyendo magazines.

• Después de ver una película, haga que su hijo vuelva a contar la película de principio a fin en el orden correcto y, utilizando los detalles, describa las escenas.

• Mientras le lee a su hijo o cuando su hijo le lee a usted, pídales que creen su propia película en su mente; Pídales que hagan dibujos de la historia.

• Al leer juntos, después de cada párrafo, pregúntele a su niño las preguntas (¿Quién? ¿Qué? ¿Dónde? ¿Cuándo? ¿Por qué?) para ver si está comprendiendo.

Ideas de Escritura:

• Escribir una historia, canción, poema o artículo sobre un evento familiar.

• Escribir una conversación usando la puntuación correcta. La conversación puede ser entre dos de sus personajes favoritos de televisión, dos personajes en un libro o incluso dos miembros de su familia.

• Crear un proyecto de investigación

• Escribir cartas solicitando información o recomendando las acciones de alguna persona en las noticias. Si, por ejemplo, un estudiante ha estado estudiando el trabajo de la Corte Suprema, podría escribir a uno de los jueces sobre una decisión tomada en un caso.

• Use tiza de acera para escribir números en la acera o en el suelo de su propiedad.

• Hagan juegos de Soduko juntos.

• Pídale a su hijo que cuente hacia adelante o hacia atrás desde cualquier número.

• Construyan usando números magnéticos en el refrigerador. (¡Se encuentran en la tienda del dólar!)

• Jueguen un juego de cartas.

• Invente problemas del mundo real que tengan dos o más pasos para resolver. Deje que trate de resolver el problema.
